ImageToday’s new technology, tomorrow’s museum piece!

At a recent museum conference an academic suggested a near future where all viable museums had a strong dynamic and vibrant online presence.  We are encouraged to embrace social media opportunities for visitors, allowing them to interact with the objects and staff, electronically.  If the visitor is wedded to their Ipad, they will expect to use it when they visit a museum, apps an’ all!

However it is always worth remembering that new technology is a tool and not an objective.  Its nice to have leading edge technology to hand, but all too often it is bleeding edge.  Very expensive and all too often obsolete within months!  So choose your technology carefully, how is that latest facebook page going to help your site? Who is going to maintain it after the first excitement dies down?  I believe its all about collections, stories and community, new technology can play a part, but it shouldn’t divert you from your original purpose.
